Lately our R4 SDHC and R4i SDHC's have been selling like hotcakes. It's no wonder since we have ridiculously good prices, even by our own standards. But lets get down to the nitty gritty. In todays post I want to discuss what you are really getting when you purchase an R4 SDHC or R4i SDHC.
First off, an R4 or R4i is a game cartridge used specifically for listening to music, watching movies, homebrew games, and "other" games on your Nintendo DS, DS Lite, DSi, and the new DSi LL. This cartridge allows you to store all of your multimedia needs on the go so you can carry all of your entertainment needs in your pocket. Since the Nintendo DS has gotten so popular, so have these game cartridges. This resulted in a surge of companies all competing and making their own R4's which flooded the market.
Since there are so many kinds of R4's that all do the exact same thing, which one do you pick? Especially since the packages all look the same, as do the cards, so what's the difference? There is actually a huge difference between each manufacturer. Besides the internal circuitry, the software is also very different. Some of the R4's have shoddy firmware and others have terrible software, or even both. If you're lucky, you might get a good R4 with great software and excellent hardware resulting in years of hardcore gaming.
The bad thing news, buying an R4 right now may be hit or miss. The good news is, in the next few sentences you will be able to distinguish the good manufacturer from all the other ones. As I said above there are a lot of R4 makers so it's hard to choose the right ones. The only way you can really tell the difference between all the different manufacturers is by looking at the obscure website at the bottom of the R4 box. Take a look at these two pictures below.

This is the only way you can tell the difference. Otherwise the two products look identical.
